In response to the ongoing federal government shutdown and suspension of SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits, Cuyahoga Falls City Council held an emergency vote on Monday, November 3, 2025, to provide $51,114 in immediate support to the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank. The emergency allocation equates to $1 per resident, underscoring Mayor Walters and City Council's commitment to protecting vulnerable families during this unprecedented situation.

Dan Flowers, President & CEO of the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank, and Cuyahoga Falls resident, emphasized the urgency of the moment. “The stoppage of SNAP benefits affecting 41 million Americans, including more than 77,000 residents here in Summit County, will remove over $15 million a month in grocery purchasing power locally. With the charitable food system only a fraction of the size of SNAP, we are rapidly scaling our operations — purchasing additional truckloads of food, extending hours, and expanding distribution sites — to meet the sharp increase in need.”

City officials said the emergency funding reflects Cuyahoga Falls’ commitment to supporting residents and community partners during an unprecedented crisis and praised the Foodbank’s leadership in preparing to meet elevated demand.
