Frequently Asked Questions – Animal Control Issues

  • Q1 – Who should I call if I see a feral cat?

Community Development – (330) 971-8135.  The Housing Division will address this issue.  If a homeowner is feeding the cat(s), we take the position that they own them and it is illegal to harbor critters.  We issue a letter/citation to the resident requesting they stop harboring the animal.  We do not remove the cat(s). Anyone can trap a feral cat and then take it to the County Animal Control Facility at 250 Opportunity Pkwy, Akron, Ohio.

  • Q2 – Who should I call if I see NUISANCE wildlife (wandering critters/skunks)?

ODNR Wildlife Officer – (330) 245-3042.  It is unlawful for people to trap wildlife.  However, the City does have a Skunk Abatement Program that compensates homeowners for up to $75 per skunk abated. Bring a copy of the receipt documenting the date of the Skunk removal, the cost for each Skunk, a copy of the contract between the homeowner and the Nuisance Wildlife Control Operator, and a completed reimbursement request form to the Mayor’s Court at City Hall and you will be reimbursed.

  • Q3 – Who should I call if I see a loose dog?

Police Department Non-Emergency – (330) 928-2181.  A loose dog is considered to be a dog at large, a violation of our local ordinances.  The police will take it if they can find it.  They will see if it has a chip to identify its owner and then return it to the owner if possible.  If there is no chip and no one claims to have lost their dog, then they take it to the County Animal Control Facility.

  • Q4 – Who should I call if a dog is barking too much?

Police Department Non-Emergency – (330) 928-2181.  A barking dog is considered to be a nuisance, a violation of our local ordinances.  The police will issue a warning if this is a first violation.  If it’s a second violation they will issue a citation.

  • Q5 – Who should I call if I see a deceased animal?

Sanitation – (330) 971-8010.  Provide an address or approximate location and sanitation will send a vehicle out to pick up the animal.  However, if the animal is on private property, it would have to be moved to the tree lawn.
