Works closely with the Human Resources Department to monitor and fulfill the hiring needs of the city. The commission is responsible for ensuring that individual fitness and merit serve as the basis for appointment and promotion within the classified service of the city.
Most full-time positions are filled through the Civil Service Commission’s open-competitive examination process, including Firefighter/Paramedic, Police Officer, and Apprentice Lineman, to name a few. All active Civil Service postings are located in the list of current employment opportunities. The specific application process for each position is outlined in these postings. Civil Service positions are also advertised in Record Publishing newspapers and the Akron Beacon Journal.
