Have your kids learn some important outdoor skills with minimal time commitment!

A variety of classes are offered covering a range of different outdoor skills- building a fire, making a shelter, learning how to use a compass, and more! Feel free to pick one or two classes, or register for all of them! For boys and girls ages 6-12. All classes are taught by Mark Baxter who has served as a youth leader for both the British Boy Scouts and the Scouts of America. View the flyer here.

2018 schedule

All classes take place on Sunday afternoons.

Fire as a Friend

Children will be taught how to prepare and build a fire to enjoy by treating it with respect rather than fear. They'll learn how to collect the best types of wood, the types of fire and why we use it, and fire safety rules. There may even be marshmallows!

  • Date: Sunday, October 7
  • Time: 2:00 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.
Shelter Building

Learn what to look for when in need of a shelter from the elements. Children will aim to build their own shelter from materials they can find around them. Be prepared for dens to pop up in your yard afterwards!

  • Date: Sunday, October 14
  • Time: 2:00 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.
Knife, Axe, and Saw Skills

Knives, axes, and saws are essential tools for us but they must be used safely and properly. They'll learn about using the appropriate tool for the task, how to handle them safely, and how to use a knife for whittling.

  • Date: Sunday, October 21
  • Time: 2:00 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.
Rope Bridge

Using some basic knots and lashings, children will help build their own rope bridge to cross. Watch out for the hungry crocodiles below!

  • Date: Sunday, October 28
  • Time: 2:00 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.
Navigation

GPS is great! If you have plenty of battery and your phone doesn't get wet... To make sure they'll always be able to find their way, children will learn how to use a map and compass.

  • Date: Sunday, November 4
  • Time: 2:00 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.
Cooking on Wood

Coming full circle, the kids will build another fire. This time, they get to cook and enjoy some food!
